The race

School of legends

The second half of the 1960s and first half of the 1970s were a golden age for touring car racing. The battles between Alfa Romeo, Ford and BMW for victories and championship titles are legendary. The Porsche 911 also competed as a touring car in 1967-1969 and 1975 (Carrera RSR 3.0) and was capable of overall victory during those years. In Germany, touring cars were the entry-level formula for all young up-and-coming drivers who later went on to international careers. Jochen Mass, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Hans Heyer, Klaus Ludwig – they all had to prove themselves in closed cockpits at the beginning of their careers.

Battle of the champions

In the European Championship, they not only faced national and international touring car veterans such as Toine Hezemans, Dieter Glemser, Gian Luigi Picchi, Dieter Quester and Carlo Facetti, but also Formula 1 drivers, including current and future world champions such as Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda.

Back to the Nordschleife

The Touring Car Grand Prix on the Nürburgring Nordschleife was an integral part of the European Touring Car Championship from 1963 to 1975, and in homage to this, a pure touring car race for vehicles from 1962 to 1975 will take place again for the first time in September 2026 as part of the ADAC 1000 km race. The race is designed as a 3-hour race for Appendix K vehicles, with the starting grid divided into three divisions. The paddock for the Touring Car Grand Prix will be in the historic paddock of the Nürburgring.
